Winter Waite Tarot

Review by Lalia Wilson

Tarot creators offer endless variations of the archetypes of the tarot. In the Winter Waite deck, a close variant of the most well-known Rider-Waite-Smith deck, the images are shown against a wintry background. Except for the tropics, most of us experience three months of winter a year, so this deck definitely fills a gap in tarot.

In a clear homage to the Rider-Waite-Smith deck, only a few cards widely differ from that deck. The remainder show nearly the same images but in a wintry setting. Among the cards that differ are The Chariot (which you will see on the Tarot Scopes page) and Justice, shown here. Even the backs of the cards give a strong winter and Christmas vibe with its red and green, reversible, plaid. Shown with this article in addition to Justice and the reverse, are the Knight of Pentacles, and The Sun. See six more cards, including The Chariot, on the Tarot Scopes page.

The Winter Waite deck is artistically consistent with the RWS deck, yet has a happier vibe harking back to a simpler time. Any tarot collector should have this deck. Anyone who likes new and different cards will enjoy this deck. Anyone who likes to surprise their tarot clients will like this deck.

The deck is a creation of Christine Aguiar and James Battersby. The cards are 4 ¾” X 2 ¾”. The Winter Waite deck comes as either a borderless edition with no names, titles or numbers, and also a bordered version with titles, numbers etc. The cards pictured are from the borderless version, which has the advantage of enlarging the images, but requiring you to be able to identify the cards without their titles.
