Tarot Archetypes, Astrology, and Two Famous Women

By Lalia Wilson

Meryl Streep and Elizabeth Warren are quite famous and both were born on the same day: the 22nd of June 1949. Meryl Streep is the actress who has won over 160 awards, including three Oscars, and double digits of honorary doctorate degrees. Elizabeth Warren is a former law professor at several universities, including Harvard Law School. She is now the junior senator from Massachusetts and a national political figure. Streep was born at 8:05 AM in Summit, New Jersey. We do not know the time Warren was born, but we do know she was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Luckily for us, the Sun and Moon, two of the three most powerful archetypes in anyone’s horoscope, do not change signs that day. The Sun is in the sign Cancer. The Moon is in the sign Taurus, considered the best position for anyone’s Moon, as it adds constancy and stability to the emotions.

One system of correspondences between astrology and tarot, the one I favor, is from the Builders of the Adytum (usually known by its initials, BOTA). This system assigns one of the trumps to each of the twelve signs and ten planets. By this system Streep and Warren both resonate to the trumps Chariot (for their Cancer Suns) and Hierophant (for their Taurus Moons). The third main archetype in everyone’s horoscope is the Ascendant, the Rising Sign.  This is the sign rising on the eastern horizon at the time of the person’s birth. The rising sign changes approximately every two hours, and requires an accurate time of birth, or a process called rectification in which the astrologer moves backwards through events of a person’s life to figure out which Ascendant he or she has.

We know Meryl Streep’s Ascendant; it is the showy and extraverted sign Leo, no surprise for an actor. Leo corresponds with the Strength card. We can be 99% sure that Warren’s Ascendant is not Leo for many reasons. Her life does not resemble Streep’s. She is physically a different type than Streep (the Ascendant is the major determinate of personal appearance). She is far more interested in politics and less interested in her private life than Streep. In fact the interest in politics strongly suggests that she has an Air sign rising, most likely Gemini, which corresponds to the Lovers.

How do you see both women embodying the Chariot and the Hierophant? Can you see Strength in Meryl Streep? Do you see the Lovers as connected with Elizabeth Warren?

I see them embodying the Chariot, a card having to do with travel, as both women have done a lot of travel in their lives and are still engaged in the world and on the move today at age 69. They embody the Hierophant in that they are feminists and accomplished women, but they stay in the boundaries of “acceptable” behavior. They don’t burn bras, or overtly disagree with the mainstream, as far as their social roles. They work within the system. Streep embodies Strength in her self-discipline, her busy life, and her intact family.

It is my speculation that Warren resonates with the Lovers card. One aspect of that card is to choose virtue over sensuality. Warren clearly is focused on virtue.
