Soothsayer's Corner: Colors

By Leean Lester

When we think of colors, we might think of the rainbow. Colors, like numbers, are a daily part of our everyday world. Everywhere we turn, there is color. We see it in the trees, the flowers, the water, the sky, and in people.

If you think about it, colors play an intricate part of our world. They are especially significant in the metaphysical world. If you do tarot card readings, you probably use the colors to help you interpret the messages for your client. In reiki or sound energy work, you use colors as well. Colors are important in spiritual work, too. For example, in candle rituals, certain wax colors are used for different meanings and purposes.

Here is a basic list of colors and their attributes:

White = receptivity, self-control, resilience

Red = courage, energy, love, creativity, protection

Orange = health, joy, positive energy

Yellow = success, understanding, friendship

Green = abundance, hope, luck, prosperity

Blue = faith, forgiveness, peace

Violet = angelic requests, intuition, spirituality

Pink = love, honor, friendship

Brown = animal magic, earth awareness

Black = protection, transformation

Cobalt = strength, self control, stability

Apple Green = emotional healing, protection

Silver Blue = deep wisdom, the moon

Light Red = self-love, friendship

Gold = solar deities, god, riches

Silver = removing negativity, encouraging stability, increasing psychism, protection, invoking the goddess

The four shades is another system of color attributions. In this system, colors are grouped into four categories: warm, cool, natural, and spiritual. Each category, or shade, determines the attributes of colors. Warm shades, including red, orange, yellow, and pink, are associated with solar energies. These colors are useful in spells for harnessing the sun’s life-giving power. Cool shades such as blue, indigo, purple, and turquoise, bring attributes such as clarity, cleansing, and serenity to spells. Natural shades, such as green, brown, and gray, are associated with the earth. These colors correspond to natural growth. Spiritual shades, which include white, black, silver, and gold, are associated with spiritual concepts.

Elements and chakras are also associated with colors. The colors found in different types of stone also have certain meaning. Ribbons of various colors have special meaning when used in spells and rituals. Astral signs, planets, and days of the week are also associated with certain colors. Even the seasons are each associated with color: yellow for spring, red for summer, blue for autumn, and dark green for winter. Color symbolism is incorporated into quite a wide variety of esoteric practice!

Until next time, many blessings!
